Description

Verdant Retail Group operated forty-two physical stores alongside an e-commerce storefront, but the two ran on completely separate inventory systems. Stock levels were reconciled manually every night, which regularly led to overselling, cancelled online orders and roughly six hours of avoidable operational effort per day. The objective of this project was to build a single source of truth for inventory, pricing and orders across every sales channel.

Our squad of ten — spanning backend engineering, frontend development, QA and UX design — designed and delivered a unified commerce layer that sits between the storefront, the warehouse management system and the in-store point-of-sale terminals. The solution was built on an event-driven architecture using Node.js microservices, Amazon SQS and EventBridge for message handling, PostgreSQL for transactional data and Redis for high-frequency stock lookups. We integrated directly with their existing POS hardware through a custom middleware adapter, rebuilt the storefront's cart and checkout experience in React, and introduced a click-and-collect journey allowing customers to reserve online and collect in store within two hours.
